May 10, 2007 – David Patrick and John Simcik attend the Certified Floodplain Management Conference at Rice University.

David Patrick, P.E., C.F.M. and John Simcik, P.E., C.F.M. attended the Certified Floodplain Managers Conference held on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas. The focus of the short courses involved utilizing HEC-RAS in the management of floodplains and its applications to hydrology. The second portion of the short course concentrated on the real time modeling of storm events through the use of Doppler radar. By creating models of floodplains and integrating Doppler radar with in the model, it becomes feasible to review actual drainage flows and patterns of specific storms rather than focusing on peak storm events. In the future it will be possible to project storm patterns utilizing radar and predict, through modeling, future paths of storms and the effects they will have on water conveyances.

KPA Associate, Alvin R. “Trae” Sutton, III, P.E, was named 2006 Young Engineer of the Year for the Central Texas Region by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) at their annual banquet held in late February.

Mr. Sutton currently serves as the MathCounts coordinator on behalf of TSPE Central Texas Chapter and is the Region II MathCounts Representative on the State level. MathCounts is a problem solving based math competition used to promote and educate 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students about the Engineering Profession. He is also active in community organizations which include the Rotary Club and Lions Club of Belton.

Trae also serves as President and Director of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Central Texas Chapter.

Kasberg, Patrick & Associates, LP is pleased to announce that Alvin R. “Trae” Sutton, III, P.E. has been named as an Associate. As an Associate he will have enhanced roles in the Firm’s business development, quality control, and client services.

Mr. Sutton holds a bachelors degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and has been with the firm for over 6 years. He currently serves as President and Director of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Central Texas Chapter and is the MathCounts coordinator on behalf of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Central Texas Chapter and Region II MathCounts Representative for the Texas Section.

He is also active in community organizations which include the Rotary Club and Lions Club of Belton. CAD Manager Douglas Krumnow and technicians Fabian Gomez and Dustin Marx and CAD intern Ronnie Lawson of the KPA CAD Department attended the Austin Civil 3-D User Group inaugural meeting held at DC CADD in Austin. Following the Q&A portion of the meeting the main topic presented was “Creating detention ponds using feature lines”. The group also discussed desired future topics, meeting times and alternate meeting locations including Temple.

Kasberg, Patrick & Associates, LP is pleased to welcome Devon K. Dreyer as an Engineer-in-Training to our staff. Mr. Dreyer received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University in December 2006. Devon served as an intern with KPA in the Summer of 2006 working with KPA’s Engineers on various projects which included water, wastewater and streets and drainage. We look forward to him joining our team which is committed to serving our clients and leading KPA into the future.

CAD Technician Dustin Marx attended Autodesk University in Las Vegas, Nevada November 28 thru December 1, 2006. More than 7,500 Autodesk product users attended the 4 day conference that included more that 500 multilevel classes and hands-on labs. Classes attended by Dustin included development of accuracy and efficiency, complex model design, and various workflow methods. Presentations were also made for how the current software is being implemented for “out of the box” uses and the direction and future of Autodesk Civil 3D™.

Autodesk University also provided a forum to network with individuals across the country to discuss real world implementation of the software.

Trae SuttonMr. Trae Sutton, P.E. attended software training on Haestad Method’s PondPack October 2-4, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The training course provided discussions and hands-on workshops on Hydrology and Hydraulics analysis, Pond Design Basics and Advanced Software Modeling. Trae completed advanced workshops of modeling interconnected ponds, single pond design, multiple pond design and channel design. The workshops consisted of determining the drainage basins sizes, utilizing the SCS Method, designing the pond size, outfall structure and any downstream channel improvements based on pre-development and post development rainfall runoff.

Ginger TolbertGinger R. Tolbert, P.E. attended software training on Haestad Method’s SewerCAD and an advanced training sessions on WaterCAD September 11-15, 2006 in Watertown, Connecticut. These advanced training courses provided discussions and hands-on workshops on capacity analysis, rehabilitation, new system design, model calibration, pump selection and master planning for water and wastewater collection systems. Both steady-state and extended-period simulations were presented. Mrs. Tolbert has been using WaterCAD (previously known as Cybernet) for more than ten years as a tool in analyzing municipal water systems.

R. David Patrick, P.E. and John A. Simcik, P.E. attended the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 4-Day National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Course held in College Station, Texas from September 11-15. The course was presented by FEMA Region VI staff in partnership with the Texas Floodplain Managers Association (TFMA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The course, titled “Managing Floodplain Development through the National Flood Insurance Program” provided intensive training for managing new and existing development within floodplains. After the conclusion of the course, both Mr. Patrick and Mr. Simcik completed and passed the exam to become Certified Floodplain Managers (CFM).

DSC01678On June 30, 2006 Belton Mayor Jim Covington and City Manager Sam Listi ‘snipped’ the ceremonial barbed wire to officially open the Nolan Creek Hike & Bike Trail.
