Celebrating Four Decades of Engineering Excellence: Michael Newman’s Professional Journey

In the realm of engineering, where precision and innovation play crucial roles in urban development, Michael Newman’s career stands out for its dedication, innovative contributions, and significant impact on community safety and infrastructure.

Michael started his career in February 1984 as an Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) at S.A. Garza Engineering, Inc., in Austin, Texas, where he laid the foundation for a distinguished career. In September 1984, he accepted a pivotal new role with the City of Austin’s Office of Land Development Services Department – Engineering Review Division, marking the start of an extensive 22-year tenure with the City of Austin. During this time, Michael showcased his expertise in various roles, contributing significantly to the Public Works Department’s Engineering Design Division and the Watershed Protection Department’s Watershed Engineering Division. His tenure culminated in his leadership of the Localized Flood Hazard Mitigation Team, where he led the master planning, design, and implementation of capital improvement projects for drainage systems, thus enhancing the city’s resilience against major flooding events. At the end of his time with the City of Austin, he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award and recognized by the Mayor and City Council for his outstanding dedication and service.

Further advancing his career, Michael assumed the position of City Engineer for the City of Temple, Texas, in July 2006. In this role, his responsibilities broadened to include flood plain management, capital improvement project planning, implementation, and maintenance, and plan review, among others. His contributions to Temple’s development and infrastructure led to his recognition as Retired with Distinction from the City of Temple Public Works – Engineering where he was once again recognized by the Mayor, City Manager, and City Secretary.

After retiring from his position with the City of Temple, Michael’s commitment to engineering excellence continued as he joined KPA in December 2012 as a Senior Project Manager. In this capacity, he has been a valued mentor and played a crucial role in the design and implementation of street and drainage projects, conducting essential drainage studies, and writing technical reports in support for KPA’s Municipal Clients projects.
